BADRINATH
It is
considered the holiest of the four main shrines of Uttrakhand. Badrinath
is one of the itinerary of the every devout Hindu. The present temple was
built about 2 centuries ago by the Kings of Gharwal. The principal idol in
the temple is of black stone and represents Lord Vishnu seated in a
meditative pose, and flanked by Narayan. Badrinath is also known as Vishal
Badri. The temple remains closed from October to April due to severe
winter conditions. The famous hot spring of Taptkund and Naradkund are
just below the temple. A dip considered holy and refreshing to the body as
well as the soul is a must before offering prayers to Shri Badrinath.
In the 8th Century A.D.,
the Adiguru Shankarachara, while climbing to a place, Called Ashta Khand,
for meditation, an Akashvani said to him, Shankar the thing they wanted to
attain through mediation, can be attained by three, by re-enshrining the
idol of Lord Vishnu, which lies asleep in the Narad Kund. Avail of
this opportunity and be blessed. The Adiguru dived into the Narad
Kund and recovering the idol of Vishnu, duly reshrined it and once again
the Temple of Badrinath became a Hindu shrine. Made of Shalagram
stone (black) the details are not well defined the result of weathering,
then thrown in the pond for several years. Seated in 'padmasan'
(seated) posture, opinions differ as to wheather the idol is of Vishnu or
the Buddha, who is always depicted in an akin posture called the "Bodhisattava".
