GUJARAT
INDIA TOURS
The
history of Gujarat contains many glorious
chapters, glorious events and colourful personalities, beginning with
Krishna and Dwarka, and culminating with Mahatma Gandhi and the Sabarmati
Ashram. The intervening 4000 years have left behind many breathtaking
monuments and events. These bear mute testimony to the glory that was, is,
and will continue to be Gujarat - like nowhere else in India.
THE SUN
TEMPLE, MODHERA
The sun
temple at Modhera is one of the two Sun Temples in the world - the being
at Konarak. Modhera, in north-western Gujarat, 119km from Ahmedabad, is
located on a high mound, on the left bank of the river Pushpawati. The Sun
Temple is an exemplary model of art and architecture of the 11th century -
a style that was to influence the development of temple architecture in
neighboring regions.
DWARKA
Dwarka
is the headquarters of the Okhamandal taluka, located in the extreme west
of the Saurashtra peninsula, on the Arabian sea. The name Dwaraka is
derived from the word "Dwar" (door) since, in ancient times, its
flourishing was conceived to be the entry to the mainland.
AHMEDABAD
It seems
almost paradoxical that the fortified city of Ahmedabad, which witnessed
many turbulent battles and sieges, including conquest by the Mughals,
Marathas and British, should be associated with Mahatma Gandhi, one of the
world's best known Indians, who preached peace, social justice and
non-violence.
JUNAGADHGIRNAR
Named
for its old fortress, the Uparkot , dating from Maurayan period as
retified by the 1st-5th century Buddhist caves inside. The fort has
impressive walls, step-wells, moats and palace-turned- mosque.
SASAN-GIR
Sasan
is the entrance to the 1412 sq. km Gir National Park and Wildlife
Sanctuary, which is the last stronghold of the lion outside Africa, and
supports a thriving population of panther, hyena, spotted & Sambhar
deer, the world's only 4-horned antelope, Indian gazelle , blue bull, wild
boar and marsh crocodile.
PALITANA
The
temple covered Shetrunjay Hill, 2000 feet over Palitana town, is dotted
with 863 shrines, and has some really exquisite marble temples of great
religious and artistic importance. The temples are said to date from 11th
to the 20th century.
