NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK
This
643 sq km wildlife sanctuary (also known as Rajiv Gandhi National
Park) is in an isolated pocket of the Kodagu (Coorg) region, 93km
south-west of Mysore. Until a few years ago, it was one of the
country’s finest deciduous forests. There are currently 55 to 60
tigers as well as leopards and elephants, but you’re more likely
as leopards and elephants, but you’re more likely to see gaur,
muntjac (barking deer), wild dogs, bonnet macaques and common
langur.
The park has seen few visitors in recent years and
facilities are still minimal. The best time to view wildlife is
the hot months (April to May), but winter is a much more pleasant
time (November to February).
Places to Stay
In Nagarhole, there are two Forest Department
dormitories, and rustic but charming bungalows.
Kabini River Lodge, near
Karapur on the Mysore to Mananthavadi road, is a former
maharaja’s hunting lodge.
Getting There & Away
Direct buses to Nagarhole leave from
Mysore’s Central bus stand at 7 am and 1:30pm and take four
hours to reach the park.
