The large meadow of Gulmarg is 52 km south-west of
Srinagar at 2730 metres. The name means Meadow of Flowers and in spring
it's just that. This is also an excellent trekking base. In winter it used
to be India's premier skiing resort, until the activities of the militants
frightened off the tourists. The skiing equipment available was fairly
good and the costs very low. The area was also wonderful for ski-touring
although very little cross-country equipment was available.
Gulmarg can get pretty cold at times, even compared to
Pahalgam, so come prepared with plenty of warm clothes. In 1995, the
hotels and ski-lifts here remained closed. The following information is
included in the hope that the situation may improve.
Skiing There
is one chairlift, one T-bar, four pomas and a cable car to the top of Mt
Apharwat. The slopes vary from beginner to intermediate and equipment
could be hired cheaply. All lifts operated from 10 am to 5 pm, closing for
one hour at launch.
