THATTEKKAD BIRD SANCTURAY
The
Thattekkad Bird Sancturay is home to Malabar grey hornbills, woodpeckers,
parakeets, and rarer species such as the Sri Lankan frogmouth and rose
–billed roller. The 25 sq km sanctuary was established in 1983 by the
renowned ornithologist, Salim Ali, and is an important research area.
Thattekkad is 15 km north –east of Kothamangalam, which is on the
Eranakulam-Munnar road, roughly halfway between the two towns. There is an

To
get to Thattekkad, take a direct bus from Ernakulam to Kothamangalam or a
more frequent bus to a larger town of Muvattupula, and change there for
Kothamangalam – a further 8km. From Kothamangalam, you take the
Thattekkad bus for the next 15 km which will take about 30 minutes. Then
you and the bus will be ferried along the Periyar River to Thattekkad.
